Do you ever have a song that you haven't heard in years come to mind and you can't stop thinking about it? The last 2 weeks I've been singing this song 'I Want To Know What Love Is' by Foreigner from 1984 almost nonstop.
I gotta take a little time, a little time to think things over.
I better read between the lines, in case I need it when I'm older
Now this mountain I must climb, feels like the world upon my shoulders
Through the clouds I see love shine, it keeps me warm as life grows colder
In my life there's been heartache and pain
I don't know if I can face it again
Can't stop now, I've traveled so far to change this lonely life
I'm gonna take a little time
A little time to look around me
I've got nowhere left to hide
It looks like love has finally found me
I wanna know what love is, I want you to show me
I wanna feel what love is, I know you can show me, oh
I wanna know what love is, I want you to show me
(I wanna feel) I wanna feel what love is
(I know) I know you can show me
Let's talk about love (I wanna know what love is)
The love that you feel inside (I want you to show me)
And I'm feeling so much love (I wanna feel what love is)
No, you just can't hide (I know you can show me)
I wanna know what love is (let's talk about love), I know you can show me,
I wanna feel (I want to feel what love is) oh i wanna feel
Wanna know, wanna know, I know you can show me
Show me love is real, yeah, I want to know what love is
I wanna know oh oh ( I want you to show me)
I wanna know, i wanna know, I wanna know ( I wanna feel what love is
I wanna feel
Show me love is real, yeah
I believe this becomes the cry of all of our hearts at some point in life. The many ideas that society portrays as love leave us feeling more empty. Broken promises, rejection, and loss can leave us disillusioned. We grieve over the life we thought we would have and find ourselves searching for what Love really is.
I like the way CS Lewis put it, God lets us feel the frailty of human love so we can understand strength of HIS! The one who will never leave us or forsake us. The one who holds me tight and comforts me in my innermost being when I am hurting. The one who gives me peace that passes all understanding. The one that loves me unconditionally and relentlessly pursues me when I've lost my way. God doesn't only demonstrate love to us, He literally IS LOVE. If you have found yourself saying "I want to know what love is" like I have, I pray you cry out to Jesus and let HIM show you.
A fun little side note, although this wasn't intended to be a christian song, Mick Jones said he always felt it was special and even considered having Aretha Franklin sing it. In the end though, it was The New Jersey Mass Choir that said The Lords Prayer before doing the background vocals and nailed it in one recording. I call that the anointing of God!
